#9 - Buffy Tutorial

Go from this:

to or

Involves selective coloring.

Begin with your base:

Now this picture is a bit dark, so I duplicated the base twice and set the layer to SCREEN 100%. I also sharpened the top layer:

Now, go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Selective Color, enter these numbers:
REDS: +100, -20, -100, 0
YELLOWS: +100, -29, 0, 0
MAGENTAS: -100, +100, 0, 0
NEUTRALS: +22, +14, -12, 0

Add a new fill layer with the color #60baa8, set the layer to SOFTLIGHT 100%:

Go to Layers>New Adjustment Layer>Color Balance, enter these numbers:
Shadows: 0, -29, 0
Midtones: -21, 0, 0
Highlights: -4, -8, -4

Now go to Layers>New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation, and put +14 into SATURATION and set the layer to COLOR:

And done! Unless you rather have the second coloring, then...

All you need to do is go to the SELECTIVE COLOR layer and change it to these numbers (basically the same except it messes a little bit the the blacks):
REDS: +100, -20, -100, +33
YELLOWS: +100, -29, 0, -21
MAGENTAS: -100, +100, 0, 0
NEUTRALS: +22, +14, -12, 0

Which gave me this:

And it's done! Pretty simple, right?

Other examples:

This tutorial works really well for some icons, but not so well for others. A good help is to screen the icons A LOT in the beginning if it is on the dark side. Sometimes setting the last duplicated base layer to SOFLIGHT will help too.
